Questioner: as-Salāmu ʾalaykum wa raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuh.
Ḥayyākumu-llāhu Shaykhanā Sālim may Allāh protect you. This is Zubayr with you from Pakistan. I hope you are doing well. Shaykhanā there is a question:
Some people spread that the general speech of the scholars cannot be applied to specific individuals. And they bring this speech especially in the fitnah of Moḥammad bin Hādī where they say for example: the speech of Shaykh al-Fawzān (حفظه ٱللّٰه) when he was asked about the person who slanders a person of fornication in a house (masjid) from among the houses of Allāh, is knowledge to be taken from him? The Shaykh denounced that and said: Knowledge should not be taken from him.
They say this is a general question and Shaykh al-Fawzān’s reply is to a general question, therefore this cannot be applied to Moḥammad bin Hādī, and they take this as an unrestricted principle. So how should we refute these people Shaykhanā, may Allāh bless you. And I seek your permission to spread the reply. May Allah reward you Shaykhanā, may Allāh bless you, and may Allāh be good to you.
Shaykh Sālim Bāmiḥriz (حفظه ٱللّٰه):
wa ʾalaykum as-Salām wa Raḥmatu-llāhi wa barakātuh. Ḥayyāka-llāhu our brother Zubayr. May Allāh bless you.
In the beginning of your speech you said that they spread, then you mentioned the sayings of the scholars and from them is the reply of Shaykh al-Fawzān (حفظه ٱللّٰه) to a question and its reply. And this is sufficient for the one who accepts the speech of the scholars even if it opposes his own desire that he says: We hear and we obey.
As for the one who has desires, if you gathered a fatwā like this from al-Lajnah ad-Dāʿimah, he will not accept it rather he will reject it just like he rejected the first.
So my advice to you and to everyone who treads the way of the Major Scholars is that: do not waste your time with the one who chooses from the speech of the people of knowledge that which agrees with his desires and he rejects their speech in that which opposes his desires. So be gentle with yourselves and busy yourselves in seeking knowledge on the way of the Salaf and act on this knowledge, and ask Allāh that He guides the one who has been misguided from the path.
And suffice yourselves by not indulging in an issue about which the people of knowledge have already given a ruling which suffices and cures. al-Ḥamdu li-llāh.
The Most Exalted said:
وَمَنۡ أَضَلُّ مِمَّنِ ٱتَّبَعَ هَوَىٰهُ
And who is more misguided than the one who follows his desires… [Sūrat al-Qaṣaṣ 50]
And He also said:
إِنَّكَ لَا تَهۡدِی مَنۡ أَحۡبَبۡتَ وَلَـٰكِنَّ ٱللَّهَ یَهۡدِی مَن یَشَاۤءُۚ
Surely you cannot guide whom you love, rather Allah guides whom He wills… [Sūrat al-Qaṣaṣ 56]
Questioner: Allāhu yuḥayyīkum Shayhanā may Allāh protect you. May Allāh reward you. Do you allow me to spread your answer to my question?
Shaykh Sālim Bāmiḥriz (حفظه ٱللّٰه): Ṭayyib (yes).
