It is established on the authority of Mūsā bin Yazīd al-Kindī (رَضِيَ ٱللّٰهُ عَنهُ), he said,

Ibn Masʾūd (رَضِيَ ٱللّٰهُ عَنهُ) was teaching a man how to recite, the man recited:

إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلۡفُقَرَاءِ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ
inna-maṣ-ṣadaqātu lil- fuqarāʿi wal-masākīni

without elongating it (the alif in fuqarāʿi) i.e. shortening it. So Ibn Masʾūd said, ‘This is not how the Messenger of Allāh (صَلّى ٱللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) taught me to recite.’

The man said, ‘How did he teach you to recite it O Abū ʾAbd ar-Raḥmān?’

He said, ‘He taught me to recite it like this:

إِنَّمَا ٱلصَّدَقَـٰتُ لِلۡفُقَرَاۤءِ وَٱلۡمَسَـٰكِینِ
inna-maṣ-ṣadaqātu lil- fuqarãʿi wal-masākīni

*And he elongated it (the alif in fuqarãʿi).”

 

Source: Ibn al-Jazarī mentioned it in His ‘Nashr’ and he said, “aṭ-Ṭabarānī reported it his ‘Muʾjam al-Kabīr’ and the narrators of it’s chain of narration are trustworthy.” And al-Albānī graded it Ḥasan in ‘aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥah’ (Vol.5, Pg. 279)
